     Hendrick Jansz van Gilse recided in Chaam and is mentioned in 1503 , 1504 , 1505 and as an adult on 20 April 1514 , in 1516 and  as Alderman of Alphen  in 1537 , 1544 and 12 November 1549.

     He died before 8 March 1552.

     With Hendrick Jansz van Gilse a 400 year uninterupted reign started in Baerle (later Baerle-Hertog and Baerle-Nassau) from father to son , as Alderman , Secretary or Mayor until 1932 when the last van Gilse as Mayor passed away.

       Hendrick Gerrit Joosten van Gilse recided in Baerle-Nassau , he purchased the Inn "de Swaen" in Loveren-Baerle , he was the owner of a brewery next door and was Alderman of Baerle-Nassau 1613-1616 , 1618-1622.

       The Inn "de Swaen" was known (and still is) as the house of "double nationality" as it had two house numbers , 181 for Baerle-Nassau (The Netherlands) and 55 for Baerle-Hertog (Belgium)

       The border did run through the hallway and note that today  the Building still exist !!!! (See att. picture)

       The van Gilse family had breweries for the next 330 years and with the  Belgium enclaves  they had breweries in both Belgium and Dutch territory.

       His second wife Anneken Hendricks de Crom is thought to have returned  to Tilburg after Hendricks death , where she was born.

14.  Adriaen Hendrick Gerrits van Gilse #430, born Around 1600 in Baerle.  He married Cornelia Floris Severijns #431, married 11 Feb 1627 in Hoogstraten (Belgium), born 1608 in Hoogstraten (Belgium), died 1666 in Baerle.  Adriaen buried: 14 Feb 1677 in Baerle.

      

       Adriaen Hendrick Gerritsz van Gilse recided in Baerle-Nassau and inherited the Inn "de Swaen" and the breweries and was Alderman of Baerle-Nassau 11 September 1635-1639 and Secretary of Baerle-Hertog from 1666.

       Well known people stayed at the Inn de Swaen , Hugo de Groot after his escape from Loevestein in 1621 also the famous Queen Christina of Sweden stayed there in 1654.

       Documents from 1673 and 1674 had Adriaens seal which comprised of a "leaping deer (in Silver) with in the bottom half of the shield three clover leaves.

       It is worth mentioning that  Henricus in 1666 was appointed to Secretary of Baerle by the widow "Princes van Oranje" (Amalia van Solms Her Ladyship of Turnhout,) This was a difficult period as the Reformed Church made life difficult for Catholics.

       Fortunately a note book (bound in leather) started by Henricus and continued by his son Petrus over the period of 1687-1780 is still kept by the family .

       In this note book Henricus described the most important events of his family.

       For example the following relating to his marriage:  Henricus van Gilse and Maria van Heyst were married on St Joseph's day  the 14th of March 1687 in the chappel "Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lorette" at four o'clock in the morning ,

       Some time earlier the Parish priest van Herdegom had problems with the Scout of Baerle-Nassau whom tried to have him prosecuted  because he had performed weddings in the parish church of Baerle-Hertog of citizens of Baerle-Nassau.

       These difficulties explain the dark side  of church weddings in the chappel.

       He was governor , Secretary and Alderman of Alphen , Baerle and Chaam and from 1778 Major of Baerle-Hertog till his death on the 4th of August 1812.

       Franciscus was co founder of the bank P.A.G. van Gilse and owner of the agricultural farm Bouwhoeve in Kortendijk and was also Director of "N.V. Roosendaalsche Mij." for developing of properties.

       Franciscus also devoted himself to write a book about the family van Gilse in memory of his Father and Mother which was printed in 1919 and is in the possession of most family members..

       Henricus was a  chemist at a sugar plantation in Schragi (Java) prior to WWII and was a Major in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army.(K.N.I.L.)

       Henricus with the caputilation to the Japanese was shipped to Singapore and send to the Birma Railway which he survived.

       Unknown to him his brother Karel was there as well and also survived this ordeal.
